- c.900 Beginning of warmer climatic conditions known as the 'Little Climatic Optimum', lasting 300 years
- c.900 King Harald Fine-Hair of Norway gave Ragnvald, Earl of Møre, Orkney and Shetland as a payment for the loss of Ragnvald's son Ivar. Ragnvald did not want the Islands, as they were too far from his lands in Norway. He asked his brother Sigurd if he wanted the islands. And he did. King Harald gave Sigurd the title of "Earl of Orkney and Shetland". Sigurd became a mighty leader and was called "Sigurd the Powerful".
- c.900 A Viking Longship driven ashore on Mousa, Sandwick.
- A record exists of wreckage from an unidentified vessel having washed ashore at Stonganess, at the north end of Bluemull Sound, just south of Cullivoe, Yell.
