- According to local folklore, an unidentified vessel wrecked between Bressay and the Isle of Noss, possibly in Noss Sound, circa. 1000. The incident possibly may have occured during either the 10th or 11th Centuries.
- About this time, Old Norse splits into West Norse and East Norse. East Norse consists of Danish and Swedish, West Norse of most of the rest. West Norse comes to be referred to as "Norn".
