Christian I, King of the united Kingdoms Denmark, Norway and Sweden, mortgaged Shetland to King James III of Scotland. He did so without permission from his Norwegian Council, the 'Riksråd'.
Later kings of the Danish-Norwegian union tried to redeem the pledged islands, but the Scottish Kings and later the United Kingdom refused.
