- Geert Hemelingk from Bremen (brother of Cordt Hemelingk (see 1557) was trading at Sumburgh. One of his ships, the Pelikaan, was taken by James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, Duke of Orkney when he fled to the north and later on to Copenhagen.
- The explorer, Sir Martin Frobisher on his first voyage of discovery in the "Gabriel" under Captain Christopher Bell, anchored in St Ninian's Bay to attend to a leak and take on board fresh water, before continuing northwards.

The Unicorn, a frigate of Dundee, Scotland in close pursuit of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, Duke of Orkney in the commandeered Pelikaan during his flight northwards from Scotland, struck hard on a shoal to the north of Bressay Sound, which has ever since been known as The Unicorn.

An Act of Scottish Parliament ruled that Shetland and Orkney were to remain subject to their own laws and not to the common law of Scotland.
