  • A fleet of about 60 ships under the Earl of Northumberland and Sir John Penington was sent to the north to demand payments according to the new tax regulations ordered by King Charles I. The fleet lay for some time in Bressay Sound awaiting the Dutch fishing armada. In the following years this duty was carried out by the Earl of Morton acting as Earl of Orkney and Lord of Zetland.
