The Treaty of Union of the two Kingdoms of Scotland and England is ratified by the Scottish Parliament.
May
1st
The Acts of Union become law, uniting the Parliaments of the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland to form the Parliament of the Kingdom of Great Britain. Shetland thus comes under London for both royal and parliamentary purposes.
- Sir Alexander Douglas became first Westminster MP for Orkney & Shetland, which is the London parliament's most remote constituency.
June
- 17th
Thomas Hunter of Lunna, the third Laird Hunter of Lunna House, in Lunnasting, married Grisella Bruce, daughter of Robert Bruce of Sumburgh, and widow of John Bruce of Muness. An amorial panel outside Lunna House commemorates the event.

The Parliament of the Kingdom of Great Britain first meets in London.
