1749
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
- An attempt was made by Denmark to reclaim Shetland, which had been mortgaged to Scotland in 1469 by King Christian I. As with previous attempts, Scotland ignored the claim.
- An unidentified sail brig, laden with a cargo described as "Shetland goods", but not stated whether export or import goods, and an unknown number of passenger, thought possibly to have been registered in Shetland, Captain W. Rae. Is recorded as having wrecked at "Noss". It is unclear from the record whether this was the Isle of Noss, Bressay, which is the preferred option within the record, or Noss, Scousburgh. Only the Captain was saved, all the other souls aboard perished.
May
- The Bona Fortuna, a 'snow', a brig variant, laden with timber drove ashore in Bressay Sound.
