Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
- An unidentified vessel is recorded as having wrecked on the Ship Stack at the southern-most extremity of the entrance to Nor Wick, Unst c. 1757. However it is suspected that this record may actually refer to a vessel believed to have been named Geestemunde, which wrecked at the same location on December 19th 1737, due to a typo having been made in recording the year.
Capt. James Cook in Lerwick
In late July 1757, Capt. James Cook joined HMS Solebay at Leith. Cook travelled north to join the vessel as master, his first appointment in that rank. He had passed his master's examination on 29 June 1757 at the Water Lane premises of Trinity House. The HMS Solebay left Leith on 2nd August 1757 on patrol and returned on 7th September 1757.
