- As it was occasionally found to be a matter of some difficulty to procure the number of men required by law for the Greenland whale-fishing ships at the English & Scottish ports where they were fitted, an act of Parliament (22nd Geo III, c. 19) permitted the ships to procure a part of their crew in Shetland or Orkney, not to exceed two men for every 50 tons burden, and to land them at the same place on their return from the fishery.
The Endeavour, a full rigged ship laden with a cargo of timber, of and for Liverpool, England, from Danzig, Prussia, (now Gdansk, Poland) wrecked on St Ninian's Isle, Bigton. Five of the crew were saved, nine were lost.
