- An unidentified vessel wrecked at Vats Wick, Heoga Ness, Yell.

The Concordia, an East Indiaman laden with a cargo of Naval Stores, of Copenhagen, Denmark for Tranquebar or Trankebar (Tharangambadi), India, wrecked on the Taing of Helliness, Cunningsburgh. The mate and twelve of the crew were saved, thirty nine souls were lost.

John Clunies-Ross, known as the "King of the Cocos Islands" was born at the Haa of Sound.
November
- The Sampson, a sloop, of Glasgow, Scotland for Iceland, grounded on Fair Isle, was refloated and anchored in the Bay of Quendale, Dunrossness, but subsequently drove from anchor there and eventually wrecked on Foula.
December
- An unidentified sloop is recorded as having wrecked on Foula, however there is some suggestion that the event may have occured earlier, during the 17th Century.
