An unidentified sail brig was towed in to Scalloway Harbour, where she was declared a wreck.

John Bruce, who became the tenth Laird of Sumburgh, married Mary, (born 31st of December 1805), daughter of John William Nelson, master shipwright to the Navy.

Charles Dundas, MP for Orkney and Shetland, died. - 16th
Great Storm off Shetland, 17 boats and 105 crewmen lost.
During this storm, Garth Petrie of East Yell, and John Smith of Cunningsburgh,were separately rescued by a Dutch ship captained by Hendrik Manneke who was rewarded with a payment of 5 guineas by the Commisioners of Supply. In May, the following year, another Dutch ship, Captain Jean Clerck, came upon Garth Petrie's boat, remarkably still afloat after 10 months. The boat was landed at Fair Isle and later collected by Petrie.
About £3000 was raised for the relief of the families. Allowances were meted out annually from 1832 - 1843, each widow receiving £3, each child under 14, 10 s. and dependent parents of sons, £2.
