- Arthur Anderson, founder of Anderson Educational Institute, MP for Orkney and Shetland, died.
- Henry Cheyne of Tangwick, the fifth Laird Cheyne of Tangwick, died.

The German barque Lessing left Bremerhaven for her maiden voyage to New York. The Lessing wrecked on the east coast of Fair Isle at Klavers Geo in a foggy night five days later. All 465 passengers and crew (among them 69 youth and 27 babies) were safely brought ashore with the help of local fishermen.

The Sarah Brown, a sail smack, drove from anchor in Lerwick Harbour during a WNW gale and went ashore on rocks at the North Ness.

The nameboard of a vessel, the Mayflower, registered in Newcastle, England, reported washed ashore at Maywick, Dunrossness. The fate of this vessel is otherwise unknown.
