- The first Earl of Zetland was launched. She served the North Isles until 1939.
- Lerwick Harbour Improvements Act 1877 and the constitution of the Lerwick Harbour Trust (see Lerwick Port Authority).
- William Irving came as a missionary to West Yell Kirk.
- Three decked boats were introduced experimentally at Lerwick.
- The Lady Cockburn, a wooden hulled sail smack, of Lerwick, drove from anchor and wrecked at or near Walls. Circa. 1877.
January
- An unidentified vessel laden with a cargo of timber persumed foundered near the NE of Shetland. A report by Captain Sinclair of the vessel Lady Ambrosine of and from Lerwick for Haroldswick, Unst, intermediate locations in between, and return, states that on the 3rd the vessel struck an object at a position approx 2 miles S of Burravoe, Yell, persumed to be a floating wreck or wreckage. And on the 4th great quantities of battens and deals were observed floating along the NE coast. Upon return to Lerwick the Lady Ambrosine was beached for inspection, and it was discovered part of her forefoot had been carried away and the gabbard straik partly split.
- 23rd
The Veranda, a schooner or brigantine, of either Porsgrund or Drammen, Norway. Having put in to Lerwick Harbour on December 26th 1876 was subsequently lying at anchor near the North Ness, when, during storm conditions on the 23rd, she parted her anchors and drove ashore on a Baa near the Greenhead, and was subsequently declared a total loss. - 26th/27th
The Gem (LK84), a cutter or smack, of Lerwick. While lying at anchor in Vaila Sound she drove ashore on Limekiln Point in heavy weather, and became a total loss.
February

Thomas Irvine of Midbrake died.
April
- 2nd
The Favourite, a wooden hulled sailing sloop, registered in Sandwick, was wrecked on the Taing of Sandsayre, Sandwick.
June
- 6th
The Freya, a lugger, on a pleasure trip, of Lerwick, wrecked at the entrance to Aithsvoe, Cunningsburgh. One person was saved, but one was lost.
July
- 19th
The Duncan, a steamship, in ballast, of and from Dundee, Scotland, and for Archangel, Russia, wrecked near South Harbour, Fair Isle during fog. All aboard were saved.
August
- 27th
The Dorothea Elizabeth, a yacht, laden with fish, of and from Aalesund, Norway, wrecked in Yell Sound.
September
- 19th
The Black Watch, a full rigged ship, in ballast, of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, from Bremerhaven, Germany, and for New York, U.S.A. wrecked on the westernmost point of Fair Isle. All of the crew were saved.
October
- 15th
- The Sapphire, a schooner, of Lerwick, while moored at the quayside at Freefield drove against it, became holed and sank.
- The Spy, a sail smack with an amount of fish onboard, went aground in Symbister Bay, Whalsay. The fish was discharged and landed, and she was refloated and taken to Lerwick by the 20th. No further information is available concerning her subsequent fate.
November

First election of the Lerwick Town Council since the system changed from elected 11 members every three years to four members every year (with three year terms). - 13th
The Teaser, a packet boat, of Sandsayre, Sandwick capsized by a squall at an unspecified location, while in passage from Lerwick to Sandsayre with an unspecified cargo. All of the crew were saved. - 16th
The Elwine, a Brig, shipwrecked on Clokkistak, Spiggie, Scousburgh.
December
- 27th
The Golden Fleece, a smack operating as a packet boat, of Lerwick, from Grutness and for Fair Isle wrecked near the South Harbour, Fair Isle.
