Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
- In 1884 and again in 1889 the American Robert Lilburn bought alltogether 32 Shetland ponies from the Earl of Londonderry's studs on Bressay and Noss. These animals became the breeding stock of the American-Shetland-Pony-Club (ASPC) which was founded in 1888.

The Life Guard (PD361), a wooden hulled sail fishing lugger, of and for Peterhead, Scotland, from Cullivoe, Yell stranded on Lunna Ness.
- 27th
The Crofters Commission, chaired by David Brand, visits Shetland for the first time since the Crofters Act was passed. A large number of Shetlanders had made applications for fair rents. The Commission holds hearings in the peripheral parts of the Shetland Mainland. Its annual report announces big rent reductions and cancellations of arrears. A return visit takes place in 1892.
