- The River Nile, of Lerwick, drove from anchor in Vaila Sound, went ashore, and was abandoned.
February

- Violent storms hit Shetland causing major damage across the isles. The storms also caused the sinking of five ships with the loss of many lives.
The magnitude of this storm with South-East wind was said to be such that no one alive had seen the like before, or would ever see the like again. In Lerwick, the stone wall from the Sletts to Seafield was flattened, and there was great damage on the South Esplanade. At the Ayre of Clickimin, the town's water supply pipe was broken and most of the road was washed away. One man was drowned in Bressay in trying to save his boat. The Norwegian barque Nor was lost with all hands at Nesting, and another lost two crewmen at Fetlar. The steam trawler Strathtay (A661) of and from Aberdeen was lost off Sumburgh and altogether more than a dozen boats were lost with all hands. - The trawler Deerhound foundered off Unst.
- The schooners Anaconda and Diana were wrecked while laid up at Balta Sound, as was the smack Osprey.
- The ketch Wellington, of Lerwick, drove ashore and wrecked at Holmsgarth.

The Hermann, a three mast schooner, laden with a cargo of coal, of Nexo/Nekso, Bornholm, Denmark, from Wemyss, Fife, Scotland and for Moss, Norway wrecked at Burraland, Sandwick. All of the crew were saved.

The Active drove ashore during a storm at an unspecified location on Shetland sometime prior to this date. She dumped 50 tons of coal, and the two vessels attempted to tow her off at the time, but to no avail. She was finally refloated on this date.
April

Formation of the Lowestoft Steam Herring Drifters Company Ltd., later renamed Lowestoft Herring Drifters Ltd., and since 1970 trading as L.H.D. Ltd.. - 24th
North Company steamer St Rognvald (I) wrecked at Burgh Head, Stronsay.

- The Marie Joseph G368, a wooden hulled sail fishing lugger, of Gravelines, France wrecked at Noss, Scousburgh on either the 6th or 10th. All of the crew were saved.

The launching of fishing boat 'The Swan' at Freefield Docks in Lerwick.
July
- 18th
The Dayspring (BF1125), a sailing lugger, of Cullen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, wrecked or foundered approx 0.75 miles S of one of the locations in Shetland known as "Green Holm". The presumption is made within the record that it was Green Holm to the north of Bressay Sound, which is probably correct.

- The smack, Liberty carrying a cargo of herring was wrecked on Dragon Ness, south of Bonidale in Lunning Sound.

General Election, won by Cathcart Wason, (Liberal), who held the seat until his death in 1921.

Delting Disaster - 4 boats and 22 fishermen were lost leaving 15 widows and 61 other dependents.
