  The Town Council of Måløy, Norway, decided to ask Lerwick to be their friendship town.

• First recorded sighting of a Bearded Seal in Shetland, at Walls.

• Thomas Fraser's first child, May, is born.

  Hamnavoe pier has its official opening.

• 28th
  Swedish cargo vessel Samba wrecked on Ness of Sound. Coxwain John Sales, Lerwick Lifeboat, was awarded a Bronze Medal for saving 5 men from the vessel.
