- The Shetland Fiddlers' Society was formed by Dr Tom Anderson.
- The St Clair (III) was built, it was the last non RO-RO ship built for the North Company.
- The St Clair (II) was renamed St Magnus (IV).

Fraserburgh fishing boat, Gleaner, struck on Ness of Sound. Of the two crewmen on board, one was was rescued by the Lerwick Lifeboat "Claude Cecil Staniforth", the other was picked up from a liferaft by another fishing vessel entering Lerwick Harbour Gleaner later drifted across Brei Wick and was smashed on the shore to the west of Sletts pier. Divers from the Malakoff yard later salvaged the engine.

- First Hamefarin held, when ex-pat Shetlanders and descendent's of earlier emigrants returned to the Isles from world wide for a week of celebrations.

St Clair (III) arrives on maiden voyage from Aberdeen.

Author and folklorist E. S. Reid Tait died.
