Worst blizzard in Shetland since 1947.Many roads blocked as wind reaches 120mph and three boats are driven ashore in Lerwick Harbour.

- The Kveldsro House Hotel opens.

The British wooden fishing vessel Vesper grounded, subsequently refloated, but sank, on the Clumlie Baa, Dunrossness.

Election of the Lerwick Town Council. - 15th
The County Police Forces of Caithness, Orkney and Zetland were merged to form the first Northern Constabulary, with Headquarters in Wick, Caithness.
August

Dunrossness Primary School visited by the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the official opening ceremony took place in October of the same year.
The new school replaced the old schools at Boddam, Bigton, Levenwick, Virkie, and Quendale. - Ragnar Thorseth completes 10 day row from Måløy in Norway to the Out Skerries in Shetland, in a 15 foot boat. The next day he arrived Lerwick, just in time to meet Queen Elizabeth.
