Two Lerwick fishermen, aged 42 and 18, were washed overboard from their vessel, the Averella, and presumed drowned at a position approx four miles E of the Bard of Bressay while their vessel was returning to Lerwick Harbour in a Force 9 SE gale and heavy swell. Despite a search of the area by the Lerwick Lifeboat, HMS Jersey, the oil-related vessel Falderntor and the Lerwick fishing boat Andromeda for several hours on the evening of the incident, and again the following morning by HMS Jersey, no trace of the men was found.

The Victory (1983), LK 231, of Skeld. A motor fishing vessel, sank 3 miles SW of the island of Vaila.

General Election Jim Wallace, Liberal wins the seat vacated by Jo Grimond, Liberal, with a majority of 4,150. Amongst the others standing was Winnie Ewing of the SNP.

- An S-61N operated by Bristow Helicopters Ltd first took up service at Sumburgh in November 1983. The contract started on the 1st of December.
