The Loraley (PD44), a motor fishing vessel, registered in Peterhead, Scotland, sank at 60.14N, 00.00W, approx 28 miles ESE of Out Skerries.

The Kiaull Marrey (LK584), a motor stern fishing vessel, registered in Lerwick, sank at 60.28N, 00.58W, approx, 2 miles SE of Heoga Ness, Burra Voe, Yell.

Election of the Shetland Islands Council.

- 25th
A British International Helicopters Sikorsky S-61 registration 'G-BEWL' coming in from Sumburgh Airport crashed onto the Brent Spar oil rig as the pilots were attempting to land. The Sikorsky fell into the North Sea where six of the 13 passengers and crew onboard died.

- The Salton Sea, a steel hulled offshore supply vessel registered in Honduras, Central America, which had been arrested in Kent, England, two years previously on drug smuggling charges, was sunk by the Navy at 60.59N, 00.01E, approx 30 miles NE of Muckle Flugga, Unst, when it was used as a target during an excercise.

- The Vidra, a fishing vessel, wrecked on Burwick Holm, in Bur Wick, west of Scalloway.

The Inverness registered Premier (INS 121) capsized and sank with all hands in storm conditions at a position approx between 30 - 50 miles generally to the S - SE of Shetland.
