Adalia
The Adalia, a steel hulled steamship laden with a cargo of timber and carrying an unspecified number of passengers, 3847 GRT, 110 L x 14 B metres, built 1899 Sir James Laing & Sons. Ltd. Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, England, owner Ellerman Lines Ltd. (Hall Line Ltd.), Liverpool, England, registered in Liverpool, England.
This vessel in passage from Archangel, Russia, for London, England, was attacked by the German submarine U 94, Captain Alfred Saalwächter, and sunk by gunfire at a position approx 53 miles NE of Muckle Flugga, Unst on July 29th 1917.
One soul was lost as a result of this incident, that of Chief Steward C.F. Billes who died on August 4th. He was interred in Voe Kirkyard, and his grave marker can be seen there.
The same submarine sank the Ingeborg some miles to the south on the same day, and the Manchester Inventor, the Souma and the Kildin in the same general area the next day.
