Alistair Carmichael

Alistair Morrison Carmichael (b. 15 July 1965 on Islay.) is the Liberal Democrat MP for the constituency of Orkney & Shetland. Initially he was elected on 7th June 2001, after Jim Wallace had resigned the seat to represent Orkney in the Scottish Parliament, and retained the seat with an absolute and increased majority in 2005. He graduated Aberdeen University with an LLB in 1992, and became a qualified solicitor in 1993. He lives in Orkney.

Political Career
In 2007, then Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell appointed Alistair as the parties spokesperson for Northern Ireland and Scotland, a position he resigned from in March 2008 in relation to a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Nick Clegg, who by this time had replaced Campbell as party leader, reappointed Alistair to the position in October 2008. Following the resignation of Mark Oaten, Carmichael briefly held the position of Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesman
