The Anglo Dane, an iron hulled steamship laden with a cargo of coal, 63 L x 9 B metres, 808 GRT, built 1866 A. Leslie & Co., Newcastle, England, owner Det Forenede Dampskibs Selsk (H. Lemmeke), Copenhagen, Denmark, registered in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This vessel in passage from South Shields, England, to Helsingør, Denmark, struck a mine at 0.75 miles SSW of Bressay Lighthouse on October 21st 1917. One soul was lost.

The mine is beleived to have been laid by the German submarine UC 40, Captain Hermann Menzel.

The same submarine had previously torpedoed and sunk the Slavonic two days earlier on the 19th, and she also torpedoed the Flynderborg on the 21st, both in the same general area. She also went on to torpedo and sink the Woron 25 miles to the NE, and attack and damage the Novington 25 miles to the E, both on the 24th.
