The Alcidae or Auks are a family of bird species, in the order Charadriiformes. The alcidae and the penguins of the southern oceans are a superb example of convergent/parallel evolution, sharing many features in common, despite not being related. Unlike the penguin, the auks, with the exception of the now extinct Great Auk (Alca impennis) are all capable of flight.

All the auks that live in Shetland are seabirds, but they are amongst some of the best known in the islands:
