The Bay of Quendale, (HU375120), old Norse : "Kverndalabuktr" = the bay at the valey with the mill, is near the south end of the South Shetland Mainland, between Garths Ness and Toab.
The bay has a sandy beach which extends to almost 1 mile in length. To the south of the bay is the uninhabited island of Lady's Holm.
For centuries the bay has been, and still remains today, albeit to a lesser degree, a popular anchorage. Consequently it has also been the scene of numerous shipwrecks for a variety of reasons. These include the St Francisco on February 4th 1678, the St Andrew on September 29th 1731 the Christiansand on September 18th 1748, the Ardent on either September 11th or 12th 1856, the Djaeck on January 8th 1887, the Sceptre on May 29th 1917, and the Triton on October 8th 1920.
Additionally the following wrecks occured on Garths Ness at the west side of the bay, the Belvidoch in 1794, the Mary on May 10th 1816, and the Ann on September 15th 1823.
