Brian Smith, Shetland author and historian, was born in Lerwick in 1951. Since 1976 he has held the position of Archivist in the islands, and is himself one of the cultural treasures of contemporary Shetland. He is currently co-editor of The New Shetlander magazine with Laureen Johnson, chairperson of the Shetland Local Government branch of the trade union UNISON, and has long been a combative and outspoken political activist in Shetland in the socialist tradition.

Smith has published many academic papers and addressed conferences locally and abroad. His published books as editor and author include: Historical description of the Zetland Islands by Thomas Gifford 1976; Shetland Archaeology, 1985; MacDiarmid in Shetland, co-edited with Laurence I. Graham, 1992; Shetland Documents, 1580-1611 co-edited with John H. Ballantyne, 1994; Shetland's Northern Links : language and history co-edited with Doreen Waugh, 1996; Shetland Documents 1195-1579 co-edited with John H. Ballantyne and Brian Smith ; with contributions by Michael Barnes, Adolf Hofmeister and Athol Murray, 1999; Toons and tenants : settlement and society in Shetland, 1299-1899, 2000

For the past six years he and his friend Gordon Johnston have been doing fieldwork and research for a book on the brochs of northern Scotland.
