The dictionary definition of a "Haa" is a Laird's house, but many Lairds in Shetland had houses they used as summer residences and houses in or nearer the towns Lerwick and Scalloway. Travelling was not so easy in earlier times, with bad roads and no ferries, a tour from one end of Shetland to one of the towns could take several days. Many of these houses is not built as the caracteristic "Auld Haa". And many of the Auld Haas, like Vaila Hall and Lunna House are extended and rebuilt so many times that it is not so easy to see that it originally was an "Auld Haa"
