The first MP for the Orkney & Shetland constituency to be elected as a member of a National Political Party, was George Trail who represented the Whig party in the 1830 election.
Since then local politics has seen many parties. Most successful being the Liberal party, which is now called the Liberal Democrats party.
Many minority parties are also now represented in UK parliamentary and Scottish parliamentary elections.
