Sailing in Shetland, as a competitive sport, has evolved mainly from the Shetland Fourareen, which became known as the Maid. Although these days racing dinghy's such as Lasers and Fireballs have become more common. Most sailing clubs around Shetland also own a number of Mirror Dinghies which are excellent for children to learn in.
It should be remembered that although sailing is a popular sport, in the past Shetlanders relied on sail for fishing. Yoals were used under square sail for inshore fishing, while the larger Sixareens were sailed up to 50 miles from land,to the Haaf Fishing. Sail was still in use for fishing, until the last of the sail herring drifters in ????
