Prior to the Education Act of 1872, which made education compulsory, there were many small schools throughout the islands, often in old outbuildings, but there were also many children who received little or no formal education.

Following the introduction of compulsory education, new schools were built throughout Shetland. The location of the schools depended on population density, but also had to allow for being within walking distance for the pupils.

With the introduction of school transport many of these schools were closed with the pupils being bussed to other nearby schools, or to new purpose built schools. An example of this being Dunrossness Primary School which replaced 5 old schools.
