Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Shetland lost hundreds of men in both World Wars, more than any other County in Britain, in relation to the native population at that time. The long rows of war graves in Lerwick Cemetery show this, and there are war graves in every Kirkyard throughout Shetland.
War Memorials are erected in many communities, and in addition to these, there are memorials for air-crashes, shipwrecks and other things related to times of war.
