Category talk:Notable People

Well I've got the braincell off the paint and back to reality for a while... :-)
This is going to be a bit of a marathon to sort out but I'll try to have a full layout of this category page done within the next few days, and we can make a start to reorganise the old "Residents" and "Natives" categories, then discuss how to go on from there..
So bear with me, I feel more at home with a paint brush just now, the keyboard is taking a bit of getting used to again, especially since I now have a new desk and chair to get used to as well....

As part of this category rebuild I've been trying to think of different categories which need to be created to fit the notable people we already have in the residents category.
Ministers is one which springs quickly to mind. Musicians is a category I thought we had, but it turned out to be a cocked up directory page from the early days, so that is a category which must be created. Other possibilities are; Businessmen, people such as the Hays, Adies, etc..; Doctors, do we have any, if not we will eventually; Ships Captains, just a thought; Teachers,,,,,,, etc...
I suppose that we will find more as we go through them, but any obvious suggestions would be welcome.
The target of the operation is to lay out a table in such a way, by creating new categories, that anybody looking for a person with just a rough idea of what they did, will be able to find them.
Looking over the categories thing in general, compared to (God strike me down for saying this), Wikipedia, we just don't have enough categories.
A lot of this comes from the early days when we didn't realise fully that any page can belong in as many categories as it takes to properly explain that page.
The donkey work involved in this change is going to be massive, so any suggestions for possible new categories at this stage would be a great help so that we don't have to go over the pages several times.

Next to the ministers teachers might be very "valuable" ... well we all didn't like them at one time ... but in and for local memory ... ;-) ... and for the "old days" something to cover faulds, sheriffs, sheriffs-substututes, sysselmen, tacksmen or similar "officials" Islandhopper 16:51, 11 October 2007 (MDT)

Good suggestion Islandhopper. We have details of a few of them, either on pages already or about to be.
I had wondered about local government officials like Chief Executives, perhaps they can also go into an "Officials" category.
There will always be 'Notables' which it's hard to find a category for, in which case we will have an "Others" link which could just be a to a directory page, listing them, until such time as there becomes an obvious additional category. An 'others' page like that would also be a handy check list for us in the future, as people are added, to enable us to see possible category requirements.
This is going to keep the old braincell busy for a while methinks ;-)

Been giving this a lot more thought, and come up blank.
I can see how to do it, along almost the same lines as the change we made to Music, but I can't see how to explain it any better without going ahead and making the changes, which would be a massive job, and if it wasn't liked would be an even bigger job to revert.
So I think I'm going to drop the idea and delete this new category.
We're most likely better just sticking with the mess we already have because at least we all understand it.

Re-think,,,,, It's the table at the bottom which is maybe not going to work. But the three main sub categories is a must, I think we will all agree on that. So We're going to go ahead with making the changes so that the residents category becomes redundant by making sure that the people listed there are either in Natives, or Incomers.
The current Incomers category will have to split a little bit between Incomers, and Visitors. Not really sure where to draw the line, but I think an incomer has to have stayed for at least a year to qualify, anything less than that must be a visitor ???
