The Cesarewitsch Alexej (alyernatively Cesarevitch Alexei), (formerly Kurgan), a steel hulled steamship laden with a general cargo, 88.39 L x 12.19 B x 7.77 D metres, 2387 GRT, 258 hp (nominal), two boilers, built 1903 Caledon Shipbuilding & Eng. Co. Ltd. Dundee, Scotland, registered in Riga, Russia (now Latvia), owner Russisch-Baltische Damp. Gesell. (Helmsing & Grimm), Riga, Russia (now Latvia), Captain J. Attemann.

This vessel in passage from Archangel, Russia to Liverpool, England was torpedoed by the German submarine U 60, Captain Karl Georg Schuster, at a position given as 60.09N 00.50W, approx 8-10 miles E of Lerwick, on July 29th 1917. All of the crew are believed to have been saved.
