Cheynies is a group of three islands about 5.5km west of Scalloway between Oxna to the south and Hildasay to the north.
The northernmost part is a tidal island linked with the central landmass while the southern part is seperated from the two by Cheynie Sound.
Between 3-4 September 2005 the islands attracted a broad interest of the public when the Anglian Sovereign grounded at or near the Cheynies and afterwards lost about 200 tonnes of marine gas oil (diesel) when she approached Scalloway Harbour.
