Da Voar Redd Up is an annual spring clean of Shetland's beaches and roadsides.
The award winning event, which is organised by the Shetland Amenity Trust, is now in its 21st year and is the largest community initiative of its kind in the UK.
Each year up to 4000 volunteers, including children and adults from all walks of life, gather about 50 tonnes of rubbish, from roadsides and beaches, which is then collected by Amenity Trust workers for recycling or safe disposal.
Much of the rubbish collected during the 'Redd Up' is seaborne plastic items which have accumulated during the winter gales, although there is also a small number of discarded drinks containers as the UK government has yet to see the sense of instigating a 'deposit based' recycling scheme, such as exists in the Nordic countries.
Da Voar Redd Up for 2008 starts on the 19th of April, and anybody wishing to take part should contact the Shetland Amenity Trust's environmental protection officer, Mike Clifton, on 01595 694688
