De Jonas
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
The De Jonas (alternatively Jonas), classified as a warship, but may have been a privateer, registered in The Netherlands, Captain Sager.
This vessel was lying at anchor in Bressay Sound together with fellow VOC ships the Haan, Reiger and Enkhuizen. On June 15th 1640 they were surprised by ten Spanish warships originating from Dunkirk. The Jonas sailed northwards and was run ashore and burnt to prevent her capture, in either the North or South Voe of Gletness, or at Brunt Hamarsland in Cat Firth.
