Delting
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
Delting is one of the old parishes of Shetland which, while comprised of some high hills and steep valleys, harbours some sizeable settlements and industry in Voe at the head of Olna Firth, Brae on the shores of Busta Voe and Sullom Voe with its oil terminal.
Delting also includes the traditionally powerful landowner's haa at Busta, home of the Giffords and the isle of Muckle Roe. Grobsness and Gonfirth are included in the south, but not Papa Little. To the east it is separated from Lunnasting at Cunnigill Hill, and Nesting at Hoo Kame. At Gruti Field to the south it borders both Weisdale and Aithsting. Towards the north-west, Mavis Grind is its extreme.
Different to other areas of Shetland containing the element of "ting" within the place name, the name of Delting may not refer to a local ting area of the Norse settlement period. The OSA delivers an interpretation of the place name which entirely refers to the topographical situation with Del standing for dales and ting seen as a corruption of taing, a "neck of land jetting out into the sea".
