During an air attack on the 8th of December 1941, Mrs. Catherine Sutherland, wife of the Assistant Lightkeepeer was killed and their infant daughter slightly hurt.
On January 21th 1942, the wife of Principal Lightkeeper Smith, Margaret, and their daughter Margaret (Greta), age 10, were killed when the main dwelling block got a direct hit from a bomb. Gunner William G Morris was also killed in the same attack.
A memorial plaque over those dead at war was erected by the Northern Lighthouse Board and Scotland's Lighthouse Museum in March 1998.

During an air attack in December 1941, Mrs. Catherine Sutherland (aged 22), the wife of an assistent lighthouse keeper, was killed and their infant daughter slightly hurt.

On 21st January 1942 during a second attack, a bomb hit the west end of main block of houses. The building caught fire and was burned out. The wife of the Principal Lighthose Keeper, Mrs. Margaret Helen Smith (aged 50), and their daughter Margaret (Greta) Smith (aged 10), were killed. A soldier, gunner William Morris (aged 27), manning an anti aircraft gun nearby, was also killed. Extensivedamage was done by fire, blast and flying debries.

Mr. Roderick Macaulay, assist keeper at Fair Isle North, walked through snow drifts and gale force winds to help restore the South Light. He received the B.E.M. for outstanding service.
