Flotta is a small island off the west coast of the central Shetland Mainland, at the entrance to Weisdale Voe, and separated from Strom Ness by a narrow stretch of water called the Sound of Flotta. The island rises to a height of just over 10m.
During their research Venables & Venables recorded the following species of birds breeding on Flotta 1945-47.
Regular and common: Rock Pipit; Wren; Eider; Oyster Catcher; Common Gull; Herring Gull; Arctic Tern and Black Guillemot.
Irregular or rare: Hooded Crow; Starling; Skylark and Snipe.
Flotta had perviously had a presence of breeding Black-backed Gulls, however all had been shot in the spring of 1945.
