Grutness Voe
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Grutness Voe, (HU405102), is on the east side of the South Shetland Mainland, on the east side of Sumburgh Airport.
On the south shore of the voe is the settlement of Grutness, and the Grutness Pier, from where the Fair Isle ferry Good Shepherd IV, sails.
As it continues today, the voe has long been a popular anchorage and landing place, and as a result has been the scene of a few wrecks over the centuries, mainly due to vessels at anchor parting their moorings or dragging anchor in heavy weather, and errors made by vessels attempting to enter the voe. These include the Freemason on October 15th 1820, the Kleinkinderen on June 9th 1848, the Maria on October 20th 1864 the O 51 on May 27th 1866, the Nelson on October 27th 1869, the Eulala on June 29th 1888, and the Queen Of The Isles in early 1901. The Enterprise went aground on rocks at the Laward at the entrance to the voe before slipping off again and sinking, on June 28th 1921.
