Hagdale Quarry
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
The Hagdale Quarry, located at the foot of the Keen of Hamar in Unst, was the most important chromite mine in Britain between 1820 and 1944. The Hagdale Horse Mill was used to crush the chromite rock that was extracted. Serpentine was also quarried from Hagdale and used in the production of bricks and the lining of furnaces.
Chromite was used in explosives, for metal plating and in yellow paint.
The Hagdale Quarry is located on the A968, east of Baltasound, down the side-road to Little Hamar.
The pictures below shows remains of the quarry 2007.
