Harry Horse was the penname of Richard Horne, a Shetland-based author, illustrator, cartoonist, and a musician with the band Swamptrash. He was born in Coventry on the 9th of May 1960. He married a Shetland woman, Mandy Williamson, in 1990 and they lived for time around Edinburgh before moving north to Papil in Burra. Harry and Mandy died together in January 2007.
Harry Horse was a successful children's writer and illustrator, with a wonderful imagination, who won awards for his books, but was also well known as a cartoonist for The Guardian, The Independent, The New Yorker and the Sunday Herald. He illustrated many books by such eminent children's authors as Michael Rosen, Dick King-Smith and Vivian French, as well as a number of books he wrote himself, including:
