The Hermaness National Nature Reserve, is located on Herma Ness at the northwest corner of the island of Unst between Burra Firth and the Atlantic Ocean.
Designated as a reserve in 1955. It is managed by Scottish Natural Heritage under an agreement with the landowners, the Edmonston family, who own all the land included in the reserve, with the exception of Muckle Flugga and Out Stack, which are owned by the Lighthouse Board.
The Hermaness reserve is an important breeding site for many species of birds, including Bonxie (Great Skua), Tammie Norie (Puffin), Maalie (Fulmar Petrel), Solan (Gannet), and Tystie (Guillemot).
One of the most unusual birds to visit the reserve was a Black-browed Albatross, nicknamed "Albert Ross", which visited the area nearly every summer from the mid 1970s until the mid 1990s.
Interprative displays relating the the reserve can be found in the Hermaness Visitor Centre which is located in the former shore station for the Muckle Flugga Lighthouse.
