Hjaltasteyn (Shop)
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
Hjaltasteyn is a jewellers shop at 161 Commercial Street Lerwick.
Previously, from about 1910 until about 1920 these premises were Alexander Irvine's grocer shop. During the 1920's, it was bought by Lewis Greenwald together with the neighbouring shop no.163, and traded as the 'Soda Fountain', leased to Ridland and Smith. In 1940 it was purchased by Alexander Manson who traded as a confectioner until 1970. Subsequently, Roy Greenwald purchased the premises and demolished and rebuilt 161 and 163, with the archway between the shops leading to Burns Lane retained. After rebuilding, 161 was initially part of 'Greenwalds' drapery business, then Scoop Wholefoods traded here before it became Hjaltasteyn in 1993.
