Holmsgarth is the waterfront area on the north side of Lerwick, between Grantfield and Gremista, and below the Old North Road. The area gives it's name to Holmsgarth Road, constructed in the mid 70's, which passes through the Holmsgarth area, and forms part of the main A970 road into Lerwick from the north.
During the early part of the 20th Century, Holmsgarth was occupied by an endless string of Herring Stations, which endeed occupied most of the shore land around Lerwick Harbour and Bressay Sound.
Much of the land on which these stations stood at Holmsgarth has been levelled, with additional land reclaimed by infilling to produce the quay fronts and land seen today, on which stands the Holmsgarth Ferry Terminal and the Scottish Co-op Supermarket.
