Island Lass

The Island Lass, a wooden hulled motor vessel, built 1949, Captain David Gear, Foula, three crew, and in service as a passenger and general cargo boat servicing Foula, . While in passage from Scalloway to Foula carrying an amount of cargo and one passenger, was abandoned in a damaged state during heavy weather on March 3rd 1962. The passenger and crew were all saved. The abandoned vessel subsequently drifted for two days before being taken under tow by the Northern Lighthouse Board vessel Pole Star, but sank whilst still under tow in approx 60 metres of water approx 6 miles off Papa Westray, Orkney.
