James Christopher Mowat or Mouat, known as 'Christy', was born on the 17th of May 1899 at Murrion, Eshaness, where he was a crofter. He married Elizabeth Ann Johnson (b.16.6.1907, Scarff, Eshaness) on the 21st of April 1926 at the Church of Scotland Manse, Lerwick, and they had eight children.

Christy Mouat was the author of A Great Man of Shetland: the story of "Johnny Notions" (John Williamson), Eshaness, Shetland (1967) and Edward Jenner, M.D., of Berkeley, England and John Williamson of Shetland, Shetland Times (1970). The Shetland Library also hold copies of two other works, Tales of Shetlands No. 2, (1971) and Stories of Shetlands No. 5, (1973).

He died on the 3rd of June, 1977 at Murrion.
