The Lerwick Lifeboat station was established in 1930. The first lifeboat was the 52 foot "Lady Jane and Martha Ryland"

The Honorary Secretary of the Lerwick branch of the RNLI at that time was Lerwick businessman Theo Kay, followed by P. Bruce Laurenson, a Lerwick dentist.

"Lady Jane and Martha Ryland" was replaced in August 1958 by the "Claude Cecil Staniforth" which was on station for the next twenty years.

On 12th September 1978, the new Arrun class Soldian, was named in a ceremony performed by The Duke of Kent.

The current lifeboat, which arrived in 1996, is the Severn Class Michael and Jane Vernon
The Severn class lifeboats are 17m long, 5.5m beam, with a draft of 1.5m.
Driven by two 1200hp CAT engines the design speed is 25knots, with a range of 250 miles.
