On 9th November 1993 during a storm the steel hulled Latvian registered klondyker Lunokhods, Gross tonnage 2774, 83.89 L x 14.02 B x 5.71 D metres, built 1971 'Chernomorskiy' Shipyard, Nikolayev, Ukraine, dragged her anchor and was wrecked in a geo at Kirkabister Ness, near the Bressay Lighthouse. The vessel and cargo were a total loss but all the crew were saved.

The Orkney based dive vessel "Valkyrie" on the 13th of July 2008A few days earlier, on the 7th, this vessel had to be assisted by the Coastguard helicopter and the Lerwick Lifeboat, because it started taking in water in force 8th wind about five miles south of Sumburgh Head.
