Both British and Norwegian MTB's (Motor Torpedo Boats) were based in Lerwick during WWII. The Norwegian boats of "30 MTB Flotilla " and "54 MTB Flotilla" operating almost exclusively in raids to their homeland. One of these boats, with severely injured crewmen, is reputed to have made the return trip to Lerwick in under 6 hours.
